Two results: how much you felt good, and how much you felt bad, over the last four weeks.

The SPANE asks how often you have felt a range of positive and negative feelings over the last four weeks. It gives two separate results — one for positive feelings and one for negative feelings — instead of forcing them onto a single scale, because you can have a lot of both. Together they show your overall balance of feelings. This is a well-being measure, not a diagnosis.

How is the SPANE scored?
Six words measure positive feelings and six measure negative feelings. Each is added up separately, so both scores range from 6 to 30. You can subtract the negative score from the positive score to get an overall balance from -24 to +24.
Why are there two scores instead of one?
Positive and negative feelings are not simple opposites — you can feel both a lot, or neither. Keeping them separate gives a fuller picture of your emotional life.
Can I use it for free?
Yes. The authors allow the scale to be used without charge or special permission, as long as they are credited. We show it free and credit the source.
